Hero Sweetman aiming for top five

Birmingham Brummies
The Brummies kept up their unbeaten home record in the Premier League

Birmingham reserve Richard Sweetman wants a place in the main body of the team after a 15-point haul in the 47-43 Premier League win over Redcar.

The 18-year-old Australian overcame two engine failures to win five successive rides at Perry Barr on Wednesday.

"I want to be in the top five as soon as possible, I'm sick of this reserve," Sweetman told BBC WM.

"I just want to be a heat leader soon, I've just got to keep winning races and have no bike breakdowns to get there."

The Brummies were beset by mechanical problems throughout the first half of the meeting, and trailed 31-23 with six heats to go before Sweetman, Jason Lyons and Tomasz Piszcz inspired a remarkable turnaround.

"It started off awful, and I just thought it was going to stay awful," Sweetman said.

"I wrecked both bikes and it's costly. It's a very costly sport, but it's definitely worth it. I love this place and I'm having fun at the moment."

Sweetman's 15-point tally represented his best night in British speedway, with his fellow Aussie Lyons adding 13 and the experienced Pole Piszcz eight.

"Those two are just so fast, our two top guys, and without them we'd probably be lost," added the youngster from Mildura, New South Wales.

"Jason's a great skipper and Tomasz is just an unreal rider, a good mean rider.

"Coming over here by yourself, you don't know what's going on, so it's good to have a guy like Jason pitting right next to you so you can copy his set-up and just try to beat him on the track."
