Newbury's Robin Liddell claimed his third Grand-Am GT Championship victory to keep his title hopes alive.

Liddell started the final lap of the 200-mile race on the streets of Montreal in third place but burst through to win by just three seconds.

He told BBC Radio Berkshire: "As we got closer to the chequered flag, our rivals were dramatically slowing to save fuel.

"The team did an excellent job today with the strategy," he said.

"It's going to take me a long while to come back down to earth after this victory.

"This victory now really opens up the championship bring on the fight."

Liddell remains third in the championship standings with two rounds remaining, but has closed the gap to the leader to 16 points.

Co-driver Andrew Davis began the race in third place on the 21-car grid and ran fourth for the majority of the opening 35 minutes of the race before the first caution period.

Liddell is in his first season with the Stevenson Motorsport team.
Liddell took over the wheel of the Pontiac GXP.R from the American just prior to the race re-start after 41 minutes on the 2.71-mile, 15-turn Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The Stevenson Motorsport team brought third-placed Liddell in for fuel during a second full-course yellow period shortly after mid-distance.

Resuming in 11th position, Liddell had recovered to ninth with 30 minutes to run and was sixth with five minutes remaining.

But as his rivals slowed to conserve fuel, Liddell moved up to third place by the start of the last lap and ended up crossing the line three seconds ahead of his closest rival.

The penultimate race of the season is at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville on 31 August.
