Turkington moves up from eighth to fifth in the Championship |
Portadown driver Colin Turkington was the big winner from Sunday's British Touring Car Championship round at Croft as he won two out of the three races. Turkington won a shortened first race then held off the charge of Mat Jackson, who surged from 18th on the grid to second, to make it a double. Fabrizio Giovanardi's victory in the final race saw him extend his lead in the drivers' championship. Turkington's impressive day moved him from eighth to fifth in the standings. Reigning champion Giovanardi took victory from third on the grid in the third outing, also claiming a bonus point for the fastest lap, to increase his lead over Matt Neal to 23 points. Heavy rain greeted the start of the first race at the North Yorkshire circuit and an accident involving Stephen Jelley and Alan Taylor saw proceedings halted on lap five. The race was restarted as an eight-lap shoot-out and Turkington took advantage of mistakes by Mat Jackson and Gordon Shedden to take the victory. Turkington led from pole in the second race and held off the Jackson's challenge to win, despite a mistake on the penultimate corner.
Giovanardi had been having a quiet day but came good in the final race with Adam Jones matching his best result in second and Neal third. Giovanardi took his tally to 145 points while Neal is followed by Jackson, Jason Plato and Turkington.
The BTCC now takes a six-week break before returning
at Snetterton next month.
