Fernandez's defection is another blow for Champ Car |
Fernandez Racing is the latest team to defect from the Champ Car World Series to the Indy Racing League. Owner-driver Adrian Fernandez said he will compete in the 2004 IndyCar Series, beginning on 21 March in Avondale, Arizona.
"Obviously, this is a big move for us, particularly at this late stage," said Fernandez, who missed the IRL opener two weeks ago in Homestead.
"We have reviewed a lot of things to determine what is best for our sponsors and the future of Fernandez Racing."
Fernandez, along with Aguri Suzuki, already had one entry in the IRL.
Super Aguri Fernandez Racing ran a car for Roger Yakukawa in 2003 and has entered rookie Kosuke Matsuura this season.
"It is an understatement to say we have a lot of work to do in the next 11 days," Fernandez said. "I'm sure there will be challenges, but we have a very experienced team.
"It will definitely be an asset to run a two-car team and be able to build off each other."
The 39-year-old Fernandez had eight wins in Champ Car, the former Cart series, since 1993. That includes a victory last season in Portland.
His team joins former Champ Car teams Marlboro Team Penske, Target Chip Ganassi Racing and Andretti Green Racing - formerly Team Green - in moving to the IRL since 2002.
