Byrne wrapped up a superb season |
British Superbikes
Shane Byrne underlined his British Superbike title success by taking a fourth winning double in the final round at Donington Park.
The MonsterMob Ducati rider had been on the pace through the weekend, first shattering the outright lap record, at an average of 97.77mph.
He then dictated both 20-lap races with a brilliant front-running performance.
In the opener he was under intense pressure from Sean Emmett.
They traded places several times, but Byrne had the upper hand and took victory by half a second with John Reynolds in third place.
Reynolds was to cause problems for Byrne in the second race as he closed in on the runaway leader midway through, pegging him back.
But in the closing stages Byrne managed to put two back markers between them as he powered to his 12th success of the season by almost three seconds.
There were no happy returns for former triple champion Niall Mackenzie who had come out of retirement to ride for the Rizla Suzuki team.
Deputising for injured Japanese star Yukio Kagayama. the 42-year-old Scot failed to finish in either race.
British RallyJonny Milner won the Pirelli British Rally Championship on Sunday after finishing second at the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire.
The local favourite needed only to finish in the top nine drivers to seal his overall success.
And, although he was edged out by Finland's Tapio Laukkanen, he did more than enough in the penultimate race of the season.
Kris Meeke won the less powerful Super 1600 category, finishing an excellent eighth overall.
He is also assured of both the Super 1600 and Junior titles.
Shelley Taunt became the 2003 Ladies' and 1400 category champion despite not finishing on Sunday.
