Bryant & Burton in GB judo team for World Championships

Burton will be hoping to come away from Tokyo with gold

Previous medallists Karina Bryant and Euan Burton have been named in a 20-strong Great Britain team for next month's World Championships in Tokyo.

Bryant, who won silver at last year's event in Holland, is hoping to be fit to take part, while Burton earned a bronze in 2007.

Former European champion Sarah Clark is also battling to be fit to compete.

Nine members of Patrick Roux's squad are 23 or under, while 10 fighters will be making their debuts.

There is also a return for Winston Gordon, who was out of action for nine months with injury, but fellow veteran Peter Cousins is not fit for the event which takes place from 9-13 September.

British Judo's performance director Margaret Hicks said: "The team for Tokyo has been selected with two goals in mind - one for experienced players who are connecting successfully at the elite level to perform at this event and the second for development players to continue to make the right progressions.

"We had some good performances in the Grand Slam in Tokyo at the end of last year and we have built on this experience to ensure our players are used to competing and training in Japan."
