| |  Monday, 13 August, 2001, 09:02 GMT 10:02 UK Radcliffe vows to continue campaign Radcliffe (r) made her feelings plain about Yegorova Paula Radcliffe insists she will continue her fight to expose drug cheats in athletics. The British runner knows her campaign is dangerous but says she will not be deterred. "There is a risk in rocking the boat and I realise that I could become a target for those who have something to hide," she said. "That will not stop me." Radcliffe held up a banner saying 'EPO cheats out' during the heats of the women's 5,000m, directed at Olga Yegorova, who failed a drug test last month.
The Russian was reinstated on a technicality and eventually went on to win gold. UK Athletics chief executive David Moorcroft has publicly supported Radcliffe's Edmonton protest. "I think the stance she has taken is right and we support her," he told BBC Five Live. "Paula is a brave runner and she is a brave person but her personal safety is a worry for us. "Hopefully nothing will happen but it is difficult to think how we could try and legislate against something happening." Radcliffe herself added: "Dieter Baumann, who was outspoken about drugs in Germany, tested positive for nandrolone. "Then strange things happened to him. I think he was set up and you have to be very careful.
"But the reaction I have had from other athletes since the protest has been supportive. Moorcroft meanwhile insisted the only way for the cheats to be uncovered was for EPO tests to be used in and out of competition. "We have got to make sure that EPO does not take over endurance running," the former 5,000m world record holder continued. "If it does, it will be a massive detriment to the sport. "The test is there now, so let's make sure the test is used in competition, but more crucially out of competition all around the world so that any athlete knows he or she could be tested." | |
