| Jamaica grab relay gift America's Suziann Reid loses control of the baton Jamaica were gifted gold in the women's 4x400m relay in Edmonton when the Americans dropped the baton on the final leg. The US quartet were on course for victory when Suziann Reid lost control of the baton at the final changeover. That left Jamaica out in front and Lorraine Fenton made no mistake to cross the line in a time of three minutes 20.65 seconds. Germany finished second 1.32 seconds behind with Russia taking bronze in 3:24.92. Reid retrieved the baton and fought back into fourth just ahead of Britain's Catherine Murphy. "I am very disappointed," admitted Michele Collins, who handed the baton to Reid. "I know the fourth leg (Reid) was pretty devastated. She switched hands and she bobbled it and it just went down on the track. "We do believe we were the better team. We were clearly going to get the gold medal," she added. The British time of 3:26.94 left them two seconds off the bronze medal pace, which meant that Britain's women ended the championships without a single medal to their name. |
