Cuba's Ivan Pedroso retained his long jump title to claim world championship gold for the fourth time in a row.

Pedroso, who is also the Olympic champion, won with a leap of 8.40m in Edmonton.

Savante Stringfellow of the United States was second with 8.24m and Carlos Calado of Portugal took the bronze medal with 8.21m.

Pedroso's best jump of the season came on his fifth attempt and left him well clear of the field.

He was ranked 14th in the world going into the championships but the 28-year-old once again produced his best at a major event.

In the Sydney Games, the Cuban won gold with his final jump of 8.55m.

"This is the first good result for me this season and it came at the right place," said Pedroso.

"It was a very difficult competition for me because I've had problems with my right leg."

Second-placed Stringfellow fouled on his first two attempts and was facing elimination when he jumped 8.22 to reach the last eight.

"I can't ask for anything more, I came second to one of the greatest jumpers of all time, this is like a dream for me," said Stringfellow.
