| Relay woe for British quartet Malcolm could not get the baton into Barbour's hand The British sprint relay quartet were left cursing their changeover technique for the second consecutive major championship after failing to qualify for the semi-final of the 4x100m relay. The US team, however, were reinstated after they lodged an appeal over their disqualification for running out of lane. Lead-off man Jon Drummond had stepped over the line after injuring his thigh towards the end of his leg, but it was decided he gained no advantage from the error. "The track referee looked at the video of the race and decided that Drummond only ran on the line because of his injury," a spokesman for the world governing body said.
"Therefore, in the spirit of fairplay, it was decided that it was only right to reinstate the United States team." Drummond reacted with disbelief when he learned of the disqualification. "That's what you call adding insult to injury," Drummon said. "My wife called me on my cell phone and told me. My reaction was to get the heck out of here. "All I can say is that it's a part of the game. I had put my heart on the line." For the British team it was a repeat of their Olympic nightmare, as Christian Malcolm and Jon Barbour failed to complete the final baton exchange when in total control of their heat.
"I cannot believe this has happened to us for a second major championships in a row," said Malcolm. "We are all gutted. "I don't know what went wrong. I just could not catch Jonathan, but it was not his fault. "Jonathan is part of this Great Britain team. He has come up through the ranks like Mark Lewis-Francis and myself. "He is European under-23 champion and has got the experience. He knows what to do. "We were all confident we could get a medal out there but we have not done ourselves justice again." The highly fancied Cubans were also left disappointed, losing the baton in the same heat as Britain at the final changeover.
They were also anxious to do well after being disqualified for an illegal changeover in the heats in Sydney. In the first men's heat Brazil won comfortably in a time of 38.44 seconds, Trinidad and Tobago finished second and Poland third. The Japanese moved into the semi in the second heat and were joined by Canada, Australia and Italy in the third. South Africa won the fourth heat in 38.72 and were joined by the Ivory Coast and Mauritius in the semi-final. There was some good news for Britain with the women's team enjoying a successful semi-final, qualifying third in their heat behind France and USA. The quartet also recorded their best time of the season, completing the relay in 43.08 seconds. |
