| |  Monday, 6 August, 2001, 00:38 GMT 01:38 UK Golden Prokhorova triumphs Prokhorova won a thrilling heptathlon competition Russia's Yelena Prokhorova produced a scintillating display on the second day to win the heptathlon crown in Edmonton. Despite the absence of two of the world's top heptathletes - Eunice Barber and Britain's Denise Lewis - this was a thrilling competition in its own right. Prokhorova, the Olympic silver medallist, clinched the gold by winning the 800 metres, the final event, taking her points total to 6,694. Belarussian Natalya Sazanovich, who won Olympic bronze at Sydney, was second with 6,539 points, and Shelia Burrell of the United States was third, scoring 6,472 points.
The win represented a stunning second day's work from Prokhorova, who had began Sunday's events in second place behind Sazanovich. The 23-year-old began her assault on the overnight leader with the best leap in the long jump, 6.61 metres. She finally moved into the lead with a 50.73m third attempt in the javelin, five metres further than she had thrown before coming to Edmonton. Sazanovich, 27, a former world junior and European champion, also threw a personal best in the javelin but it was only good enough to make the deficit 25 points between her and Prokhorova. With the Russian having the best 800m time out of the top three competitors, victory was likely to be hers as long as she led going into that final event. | |
