| Fight is on for green Zabel has won the green jersey for the last five years Lance Armstrong is heading for his third successive win in the Tour de France - but there is still plenty to fight for as the race enters the final straight. Lance Armstrong has proved beyond doubt that he is the strongest rider in this Tour de France.
But the all-conquering American will not be getting his hands on the green jersey, which is awarded to the most consistent finisher in the race. German Erik Zabel, who has claimed it every year since 1996, is locked in a two-way battle with Stuart O'Grady. The Australian, who rides for Credit Agricole, leads the race by 11 points going into Saturday's penultimate stage into Evry. But with 35 points available to a stage winner, there is plenty of scope for Zabel and his Telekom team to steal back his traditional prize.
But the lion's share of the points are handed out at the end of the stages - and that will suit the bunch sprinter Zabel. Whatever happens, both men will be aware that one slip could prove very costly. Irishman Sean Kelly, winner of four points jerseys in the Tour, missed out on a fifth on the Champs Elysees itself with defeat in the last sprint of the race. |
