Clockwatch: Tour Stage 10
BBC Sport Online rounds up all the action from stage 10 of the Tour de France, a 209-km haul from Aix-les-Bains to the Alpe d'Huez.

All times BST.

0942: The riders set off on a gentle 40.5km climb up to the Col du Frene.

1007: Jean Delatour's Laurent Roux, Banesto's Eladio Jimenez and Kelme's Antonio Tauler take the reins at the front of the peloton.

1020: The three leaders, Roux, Jimenez and Tauler open up a two minute gap on the peloton.

1038: At the 31km stage the gap between the three leaders and the peloton is 4min 30secs.

1048: Roux, Jimenez and Tauler pass the Col de Frene. The points were won by: Jimenez (BAN) 10 Tauler (KEL) 7 Roux (DEL) 5. Roux was in seventh place in the polka-dot jersey competition and has now improved upon his position.

1100: Tom Steels (167th overall) and Florent Brard (67th) are involved in a fall.

1110: The leading trio open up a 12-minute gap.

1120: The lead at the head of the peloton changes from Credit Agricole to US Postal - they are still over 12 minutes behind the leaders.

1137: There is been a minor crash involving Stephane Heulot of the Big Mat team and nine other riders.

1212: The peloton make their way up the early parts of the 24.8km Col de la Madeleine - the first Highest Category climb of the 2001 Tour de France.

1220: There are three main groups - the leaders, the first peloton including Jan Ullrich and the second including the yellow jersey of Stuart O'Grady. The leading trio are 11min 35 secs ahead.

1241: Tauler is losing ground on Jimenez and Roux.

1245: Ulrich and two-time champion Lance Armstrong are in the first peloton around 10 minutes behind the leading duo.

1300: Ullrich and Armstrong's group is now just over nine minutes behind the leading duo. Bonjour rider Francois Simon, second overall, is also in the first peloton.

1304: Roux and Jimenez are less than 1km away from the summit of the Col de la Madeleine with the leading peloton just under nine minutes behind.

1305: Roux beats Jimenez on the first HC section to collect 40 points putting him level with Patrice Halgand in the King of the Mountains competition. Roux - 40 Jimenez - 35 Tauler - 30

1314: CSC-Tiscali rider Laurent Jalabert, former winner of the green jersey, leads the polka dot jersey standings with 76 points after finishing fourth on the first HC. Estonian Jaan Kirsipuu abandons the Tour de France.

1343: The leading pair of Roux and Jimenez make their way to the next HC climb, up the Col du Glandon. The gap between the leaders and the peloton is 7min 50 secs.

1407: Roux makes a break from Jimenez. Tauler is caught by the peloton. Russia's Alexandre Botcharov makes a break from the peloton.

1418: Bonjour rider Simon tries to move up to the front of the peloton. But the rider, technically in yellow jersey pole position, begins to struggle after making the initial effort.

1431: There is a six minute gap between the chasing peloton and Roux. Armstrong has two other US Postal riders with him.

1434: Roux takes the last set of mountain points and now leads the King of the Mountains. There are just 50km remaining.

1436: Jimenez takes 35 points as the battle commences for third with Jalabert battling for third.

1441: Jalabert claims 30 points and unofficially is second in the race for the polka dot jersey, behind Roux.

1501: Roux surges down the long descent with just 31km remaining - although most of that is a horrendous climb up to the finish.

1522: Roux makes the final ascent up the Alpe d'Huez, cheered on by his home crowd.

1527: The peloton containing Ullrich and Armstrong are still battling to catch up with Roux - but the Frenchman still holds a six minute lead.

1529: Armstrong makes a break from the peloton. Ullrich follows in close pursuit.

1531: Armstrong flies away from Ullrich as if it is a time trial.

1534: Roux still leads, with Armstrong in second while Ullrich leads a group of six riders behind the American.

1537: Armstrong has a built a 1min 30 secs gap over Ullrich and is only 2min 50 behind Roux.

1541: Roux holds firm but Armstrong has cut his lead to two minutes.

1545: With O'Grady out of contention as far as retaining the yellow jersey, the battle for the overall lead is between Simon and Armstrong. Simon had a 31 minute lead over the American, but Armstrong has cut the gap considerably.

1548: Armstrong takes over from Roux in dramatic fashion and seems to be going faster.

1555: Ullrich is closing in on second place Roux.

1600: The gap between Armstrong and Ullrich is two minutes.

1606: Ullrich stays in close pursuit of Armstrong.

Armstrong wins the 10th stage.
