At just 25, Lampkin has already established himself as a legend in the sport. He has dominated trials riding over the past five years and has his sights firmly set on adding to his set of world titles next year. Lampkin said he was "shocked" to receive a letter two months ago telling him of the honour.
But he admitted he still could not believe it until he was contacted on Sunday to confirm his MBE. "It's great to get this sort of recognition," said Lampkin. "I know trials is not one of the most popular sports, but maybe the publicity from it will get people asking what trials is all about. "To get this is up there with winning any of my world championships." Lampkin's father Martin won the world championship in 1975 and has since become Dougie's mentor and seen his son win every world title on offer since 1997. Even with famous uncle Arthur winning many televised scrambles in the 1960s, no-one in the family or the sport of trials has got anywhere near the achievements of the latest Lampkin to grab the limelight. "Hopefully I can take it on from there and perhaps a few people will want to get involved in the sport because of me getting the MBE," he said.
He then signalled something of what was to come in his debut season on the international stage when he captured his first World Championship point in Andorra - aged just 17. More followed when Lampkin notched his first European title in France - again in his maiden season. Since that first taste of international success Lampkin has matured into a virtually unbeatable trials rider, winning every indoor and outdoor world title since 1997 - an unparalleled and unbroken run which shows no sign of ending. It is an astonishing achievement for a man at the tender age of 25 and in only his eighth season of top-class competition. | |
