The boats left Cherbourg under a bright blue sky
Superb race tactics from Ellen MacArthur saw her boat take an early lead in the 3,000-mile Challenge Mondial.

Foncia-Kingfisher hit the front during the opening 12-mile coastal section of the race, five miles off the French port of Cherbourg.

It was a spectacular sight as light winds meant all eight trimarans were bedecked with maximum sail.

  Latest positions at
1500 BST 12 May
1st: Foncia. Distance to destination: 2674.7miles
2nd: Bayer. Dist: 2678.9miles
3rd: Banque Populaire. Dist: 2688.2miles
4th: Bonduelle. Dist: 2689miles
5th: Groupama. Dist: 2690.8miles
6th: La Trinitaine. Dist: 2696.3miles
7th: Belgacom. Dist: 2700.1miles
8th: Gitana IX. Dist: 2709.2miles
La Trinitaine led during the first two mile stretch out to Blackrock Buoy.

But through good tactics and perfect boat handling, it was Foncia-Kingfisher that lead the fleet as they flew past the spectator boats.

She maintained her small but psychologically important lead over the chasing pack as they headed out into the English channel.

It was really close at the front, with Foncia fighting it out with Yvan Bourgnon's Bayer at speeds averaging 22 knots.

Bayer is Foncia's closest rival
Bayer is one of four boats in the pack chasing Foncia, the other three being Banque Populaire, Bonduelle and Groupama

Pre-race favourite Belgacom was well back after losing time by missing the first buoy and having to attempt the turn again.

The oldest boat, Gitana IX, skippered by Thierry Duprey was expectedly last, more than 30 miles behind Foncia after six hours of sailing.

The boats will make their way across the top of the Bay of Biscay, the beginning of the 1,200-mile first leg out to the Azores.

Weather forecasters are predicting a depression arrivin in the next 24 hours which will mean some early decisions for Ellen's skipper, Alain Gautier.

The boats covered more than 100 miles is the fist six hours
Gautier must decide whether to go to the south of the depression on the shortest route, chose a middle route with the risk of no wind zone or take the safe but longer route to the north.

Though the weather is fine, the five-person crew will still need protection from the spray.

Hitting speeds of up to 30 knots, those on deck need to wear goggles and dry suits.

Down below, ear protectors are necessary due to the noise the main hull makes cutting through the waves.
