Ellen ready for the off
Ellen MacArthur and Foncia
Ellen MacArthur shares her fears about the Atlantic Ocean as she prepares for the Challenge Mondial.

I get excited about any offshore race but I am really looking forward to getting back out into the open sea again for this one.

It will be a very intense race as there is not a lot of room on these trimarans and though I already know the other guys, I'll know them a lot better by the end of it all!

The seas can be very short and choppy which with a 60ft trimaran means the boat can get quite a lot of hammer

I have only sailed a trimaran of this size before once, in the Fastnet Race in 1999, so I have a great deal to learn about Foncia.

And though I know the route well, the weather always makes it unpredictable.

At the moment the weather has been quite calm but generally at this time of year you get depressions that roll in from across the Atlantic, and the southern side of those depressions come into the Bay of Biscay.

We are sailing from the north coast of France out of the English Channel which in itself can be pretty hairy.

And in the channel there is a lot of other traffic and we'll be going very fast so we need to be very careful.

Tricky

Getting round the headland of Ouessant will also be tricky as that's very busy with ships and we'll be close in to the land, so that's another issue.

In fact these boats are really far happier out on the open sea where the waves are longer.

We will pass really close to the corner of Finistere then head out to the Azores.

Really the easy part will be out in the ocean, although if we get rough weather, the waves can grow really enormous and it can get quite dangerous.

Generally there is high pressure at the Azores so that means light winds but that can shift all around because the summer is coming through.

It'll be nice and warm out there but no time for sun-bathing as it's straight back to Spain!
