Fujifilm is a brand new 60ft trimaran
Lock Peyron, one of the favourites to win the Challenge Mondial race, has pulled out after suffering boat damage.

Peyron's brand-new Fujifilm was built in secret to a revolutionary new design and its participation in the 3,000-mile race was eagerly awaited.

Peyron has been forced to turn back on his way to Cherbourg, where the nine-day event starts on Saturday, and return to Trinit-sur-mer.

It is believed the main hull of Fujifilm has been damaged but it is not clear how.

Peyron was one of the pre-race favourites and was expected to be in contention for the French trimaran championship, which opens with the Challenge Mondial.

Loick Peyron
Peyron: Designed the boat himself
The 41-year-old was invincible in 1998 and 1999 when he walked away with the Fico world championships.

He spent most of last year competing in The Race, coming second on Innovation Explorer in this round-the-world challenge. Peyron.

He also worked with leading British multihull designer Nigel Irens and Marc Lombard on his new Fujifilm.

The boat apparently has numerous tricks and technological advances: adjustable centre-board, ergonomic cockpit, triangular boom and adjustable foils.

The most innovative development is the new twistable mast which uses hydraulic pumps to get it perpendicular no matter what the angle of the boat in the water.

It remains to be seen if the problem that has forced Peyron out of the Challenge Mondial can be fixed or means alterations to his revolutionary design.
