Stephen Hendry won the last five frames to avoid becoming the victim of a major shock against wild card Shaun Murphy in the second round of the B&H Masters at Wembley.

The 18-year-old from Irthlingborough looked on the verge of one of the game's all-time major upsets going ahead 4-1, before the six-time champion pulled back for victory.

However, the teenager left the tournament with his head held high, and said: "I am still proud of what I've achieved."

"Stephen has made Wembley his home over the years and in the end he had to play very well to win."

Hendry, who has not won the Masters title since 1996, was clearly impressed by his young opponent.

"Shaun certainly wasn't overawed by the occasion," said Hendry.

"He looks to have all the attributes to go all the way. He's got a good cue action; he scores heavily and pots a good long ball.

"However, it's okay playing well at the glamorous venues - but he's got to get through the dogfight of the qualifiers.

Tough match

Despite a 99 break in the first frame, Hendry looked unable to settle at the start, and later admitted to being agitated by a couple of early rubs that went against him.

Murphy, fresh from beating Marco Fu 6-1 on his debut on Sunday, carried on where he left off in his first game to lead the six times champion.

But two frames away from defeat, Hendry suddenly stepped up a gear to produce his best snooker when it mattered.

Murphy was only allowed to score 15 points in the final five frames as the Scot wrapped up a 6-4 victory.

After the epic match, Hendry admitted he regained his composure just in time.

"I had some bad luck in frame four and it stayed in my head for the next two or three frames which should not happen with my experience," he said.

"I woke up at 4-2 and from then on did not put a foot wrong.

"Shaun played well and has all the attributes to go far."

Well-supported Jimmy White or Ronnie O'Sullivan are next for Hendry who said: "I'll need earmuffs for that."

Promising display

For the young wild card entrant, it was disappointing to let victory slip through his fingers, but Murphy remained upbeat.

"I feel mentally drained, but I am very proud of myself for doing so well and while I'd like to have beaten Stephen, I came here to enjoy myself," he said.

"To beat Marco was a great achievement and to take the six-times champion to 6-4 here is very, very pleasing.

"I never felt the pressure and just treated it as another match and I've learned more here in two days than in three years on the Challenge Tour."
