Venus battles back for victory

Third seed Venus Williams will meet Lindsay Davenport in the final of the US Open in a re-run of the Wimbledon final Williams won earlier this year.

Venus, the older sister of reigning US Open champion Serena, defeated Martina Hingis in a classic three-set match.

Just when Hingis looked certain of winning the tie, Williams battled back from 3-5 down in the third set, to pull off a spectacular win.

The victory extended Williams winning streak to 25 matches and kept Hingis from her fourth consecutive Open final.

Coming into Friday's epic clash, Hingis led Williams 9-6 in career meetings and 3-1 in Grand Slam encounters.

After her win, a beaming Venus said: "I just wanted it and I had this winning streak going and she's already won the U.S. Open and I felt maybe it's my turn."

Saturday's championship match marks the first all-American US Open women's final since Martina Navratilova beat Chris Evert in 1984, and the first between American-born women since Tracy Austin beat six-time champion Evert in the 1979 final.
