| Clockwatch: US Open All the action from the second round of the US Open golf championship at Bethpage State Park, New York. 0013: Padraig Harrington completes a remarkable round with a solid par four at the ninth, almost sinking a lengthy birdie putt. His 68 leaves him three shots off Tiger Woods, and the pair will play together on Saturday. 2357: A smiling Padraig Harrington makes par on the eighth after driving into the gallery, and chipping to within 12ft.
2353: Jeff Maggert completes a round of 73 for a two-over par total. 2344: Padraig Harrington does well to get up and down from a bunker on the seventh and remains on course to be paired with Tiger Woods on Saturday. 2340: KJ Choi holes out for a round of 73 to stay two over after two rounds and in contention. Davis Love III holes a huge putt to join Choi on two over with a 71, while Phil Mickelson also ends with a birdie to go three over. 2332: A birdie on the 11th brings American Tom Byrum back to level par for the day and two over for the tournament. Colin Montgomerie makes a vital birdie on the 14th to go nine under. 2326: Padraig Harrington continues to rise above the conditions and the competition, hitting a superb iron shot to four feet on the sixth for a birdie. The Irishman is now two under, three strokes behind Tiger Woods. 2320: Japan's Shigeki Maruyama cards the round of the day, with a hole-in-one on the 14th helping him to 67 and three over par.
2305: After almost 12 hours the rain has finally stopped, but Garcia's mood does not improve when he misses a 10ft putt for par on the eighth hole. 2250: Padraig Harrington's magnificent round continues as he sinks a 15ft putt for a birdie on the fourth to go one under for the day, and the tournament. 2240: Sergio Garcia does well to get up and down from a bunker on the seventh, and remains one over with two holes left. KJ Choi is unlucky not to make a birdie on 13, but his putt will not drop. 2222: Sergio Garcia makes a bogey five at the fifth to leave Padraig Harrington on his own in second, as 11 players are locked at three over. Phil Mickelson gets a huge ovation from the crowds on 13 with an incredible shot from deep in the trees that makes the green. 2208: Japan's Shigeki Maruyama brightens proceedings with a hole-in-one at the 14th, followed by a spectacular star-jump in celebration. A dropped shot on the 12th sees KJ Choi go back to one over.
2143: Phil Mickelson halts his slide with a first birdie of the day, chipping in from the fringe on 11 to go two over. 2137: Tom Lehman joins Scott Hoch and Jeff Maggert at two over par, but there is a gap growing to the leading pack. With Woods well clear on five under, KJ Choi, Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington are battling to stay on even par. 2114: Harrington is in a share for second at level par with a superb chip and putt on the 17th, while Garcia joins him and soaks up the applause from the gallery after a 20ft birdie putt drops on the second.
2050: KJ Choi makes par at the eighth but Dudley Hart drops one at 10 to go one over. Meanwhile, Garcia has to measure out his putting distance and move his ball, as his path to the 18th flag goes through a huge puddle. 2040: Phil Mickelson is deep in conversation with a course official on the eighth tee as the course begins to look unplayable. Rocco Mediate, bizarrely sporting two hats and a pair of sunglasses, completes the back nine in 36, but has nine more to play. 2036: A birdie two at the 14th - his fifth hole of the day - sees Padraig Harrington go into fourth place on the leaderboard at level par ,while Colin Montgomerie is six over after four holes. 2032: KJ Choi drops his first shot of the day on the seventh to go four shots behind Tiger Woods, while Sergio Garcia completes his first nine holes in 38 to stay one over par. 2015: Course attendants are having to mop up as water collects on some greens. The drenched crowd is becoming slightly irritated by the amount of time Garcia is taking over his shots, but he still makes par on the 16th. 1959: Phil Mickelson drops a shot on the sixth to slip to one over par, but KJ Choi has yet to drop a shot and remains two under after six.
1915: KJ Choi gets a birdie on the par-five fourth to go to two under, and Jean van de Velde completes an excellent round of 75 for a six-over total. 1908: Some hope of a challenge emerges from the gloom, as Garcia goes desperately close to making an eagle on the 13th before holing out for a birdie to go one under. Jeff Maggert makes a double bogey on the second but gets one back at the third to go to level par. 1905: Tiger Woods finishes his second round the way he finished the first - with a birdie. His round of 68 leaves him at five under par. 1857: Reigning champion Retief Goosen ends his defence with a 75 and a 14-over par total, and Open champion David Duval is on the fringe of the cut at 11 over after two rounds. |
