Darren Clarke was unhappy with his form at Royal St George's |
Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke made a hasty exit from Sandwich after slumping to a final round 76 at the Open Championship on Sunday.
Clarke, one of Europe's leading pre-tournament hopes, finished the tournament 13 over par and was in no mood for lengthy reflection on his performance.
"I played rubbish, simple as that," said Clarke as he rushed to get a car away to take him away from the course.
Clarke had started well with four birdies and one bogey in his opening seven holes.
But, around the turn, he dropped five shots in four holes, including a double-bogey sixth at the ninth.
Four more bogeys followed in the closing five holes which meant the Dungannon player slipped to tie for 59th place in the tournament.
Padraig Harrington managed his first sub-par round of the tournament, his 69 leaving him on a seven-over total of 291.
Paul McGinley will be disappointed with his 73 for a 292 total.
Gary Murphy also finished with a 73 which saw him finish on 293, nine over par.
