Denmark's Thomas Bjorn leads the Open at Sandwich by one shot after a third round cloaked in controversy.

The Ryder Cup star's round of 69 was overshadowed by the disqualifications of Mark Roe and Jesper Parnevik for scorecard irregularities.

Roe, who had shot a round of 67 to lie at one over par and just two shots behind the lead, failed to exchange his card with Parnevik at the start of the day.

By signing the wrong card, the Englishman was immediately disqualified on what should have been the proudest day of his career.

Bjorn's round of 69 included three birdies and just one bogey and the Dane managed to par 11 consecutive holes from the eighth through to the 18th.

His nearest rival is American Davis Love III who shot a 72 to go to level par.

But a challenge is sure to come from one of the players at one over par, with Sergio Garcia, Vijay Singh and the ominous figure of Tiger Woods all at that mark.

Woods rues weak finish

Woods led the tournament briefly after a scintillating start which saw him eagle two par fives and reach the turn in just 31 shots.

But he struggled on the back nine, although he is sure to exert pressure on the top two on Sunday.

Little known American pair Kenny Perry and Ben Curtis are also at one over par and in all there are 18 players within five shots of the lead.

Faldo finds top form

One of those is Nick Faldo, who, along with Pierre Fulke, shot the best round of the tournament, a 67, to get to four over par.

Defending champion Ernie Els is at five over par after a 72 while American Phil Mickelson's 73 leaves him seven shots adrift.

The highest placed British players are Philip Price and Gary Evans who both shot sub-par rounds to feature in the top 10.
