Sergio Garcia is to take a two-month break from competition after next week's USPGA Championship. The Spaniard probably needs to finish in the top three at the USPGA to have any chance of playing his way on to the European Ryder Cup team. With a host of players in the running to be one of Colin Montgomerie's three wild cards, he may miss the event for the first time in his pro career. "I've talked to him. He knows what I'm planning to do," said the 30-year-old. "It's been a long year," Garcia added after shooting a 70 in the Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday. "I haven't had a nice, long break my whole career. I need the break, I need to miss the game a little bit."  | 606: DEBATE |
Garcia, who has not won in nearly two years, has played in every Ryder Cup since he was a 19-year-old at Brookline in 1999. He has a career record of 14-6-4 in the Ryder Cup, and has never lost a foursomes match, but has played in only 17 tournaments this year. Garcia intends to return at the end of October at the Castellon Masters on his home course in Spain, with November's Australian Masters the only other tournament he plans to play in 2010. Australian Adam Scott believes Garcia is making a good decision. "It's so hard not to play when you're a competitor because that's what you've done your whole life. Good for Sergio," he said. "We have a 30-year career out here. Two months is not much time at all."
