Garcia finished 45th at the Valero Texas Open in May
Colin Montgomerie is planning to give Sergio Garcia a "pep talk" at the US Open next month to try and inspire the Spaniard prior to October's Ryder Cup.
Despite not qualifying for the tournament, European Ryder Cup captain Montgomerie will travel to Pebble Beach to cast his eye over the Europeans.
"Sergio is the main guy I want to talk to," Montgomerie told BBC Radio 5 live.
"I'll give him a pep talk saying 'come on, I need you, we need you'. It might spur him to better things this summer."
Garcia, who first qualified as a 19-year-old in 1999, is bidding to qualify for the sixth time, but is without a win since the 2008 Players Championship and could only place 45th at this year's Masters.
Garcia, who has blamed his loss of form on trouble with his grip, did shoot a first-round 67 at the Verizon Heritage tournament in South Carolina in April, but followed that with a 77 to miss the cut by two.
More recently the 30-year-old finished 45th at the Valero Texas Open in May, having ended the Players Championship in 47th place.
But Montgomerie is hoping the motivation of playing against the United States can help Garcia rediscover his best form.
Garcia's position on the World and European points lists are not currently high enough to secure automatic qualification, though if his ranking did not improve he would be a strong candidate for a wildcard slot.

"As a competitor and as a passionate players with the Ryder Cup, the Spanish have been a fantastic asset to our team over the years, starting with Seve Ballesteros, through Jose Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez," said Montgomerie.
"The passion they bring to that event is second to none, Sergio has been no exception."
Earlier this week, United States captain Corey Pavin suggested that Tiger Woods is not guaranteed an automatic place in his side.
The world number one, who has struggled since taking a five-month break, is 11th in the points race with only eight players guaranteed to play, while Pavin gets four picks.
But Montgomerie hopes to see the 14-time major winner at Celtic Manor in October.

"I hope so, for the sake of the Ryder Cup," he told BBC Scotland, when asked if he would like like to be up against Woods in Wales.
"It would be a bigger and better event if he is there.
"I can't see Corey Pavin leaving him out. It would be a very brave man to leave out Tiger Woods. My goodness.
"I do hope he's there. If we are lucky enough to win with him playing, it's a better win for us.
"It would also be great for a Welsh crowd to see Tiger playing as a pro for the first time. I hope for his sake that he's playing and we wish him well."
