Lincoln's Paul Streeter admitted he had serious thoughts of getting his name on the Open leaderboard when he stood three under on the seventh tee. Making his Open debut at St Andrews at the age of 43, Streeter sank a 35-yard putt for eagle at five before adding a birdie at the next. But he then dropped seven shots on the Old Course to card a four-over 76. Street said: "I loved every minute of it. I really thought I had the chance of getting on the leaderboard." He continued: "I actually played really well and was enjoying it until the rain came round the turn. "I don't mind playing in the wind but I have to admit that I hate the rain, and it just seemed that every time I stepped up to take a shot it would suddenly rain that bit harder." The highlight of Streeter's round was that eagle three at the long fifth, followed immediately by the birdie that took him to three under. However the man from the Lincoln Golf Centre suffered successive bogies at 7 and 8, and two more went at 12 and 13. He then dropped three in a row from the 15th before finishing with a par to hope he has stopped the rot in time for Friday's mid-morning tee-off (1026 BST).
