Wentworth's Ross Fisher insisted that his best was still to come despite shooting an opening four-under 68 on the first day of the Open.

"There's a long way to go," he told BBC Sport. "The wind can blow and the rain can come in.

"68's a decent score and I was pleased with the birdie at the last but it was very much on there today.

"I had three three-putts and, with two silly dropped shots, I'd suddenly be five shots better."

He added: "That would have had me shooting the same as Rory McIlroy.

"This is Rory's favourite golf course, don't forget. He does very well here in the Dunhill and it's no surprise to see someone top of the leaderboard who hits it high and right to left.

"But I'm a confident guy too and I'm hitting the ball well. I've had quite a quiet year so far but I've had a couple of decent finishes in the last few weeks.

606: DEBATE

"All I need to do is play as well as I did today and capitalise a bit better."

In only his third Open at Turnberry 12 months ago, the then expectant father challenged strongly.

Surrey-based Fisher, 29, even led the field early on the final day last year round the Ailsa Course before a loose two iron at the fifth cost him a double bogey and he fell away to finish 13th.

"The wife managed to hang on, but I didn't," he said with a rueful smile. "But it was all good experience.

"And, for all the distraction about the baby coming, once I was on the course I was concentrating only on golf.

"I've just go to go out and enjoy it again and try not hit a loose two iron like I did last year.

"And that won't happen. It's not in the bag this year. I didn't think there was anywhere on this course I'd need it."
