Boston golfer Dave Coupland was denied a place in the final of the English Amateur after losing his semi-final. An epic run at Rye, which saw him play 143 holes in five days, ended in a six and five defeat by Farran Keenan. It came directly after Coupland's quarter-final against Matt Haines, in which he fought back from three down after 13 holes to win at the 24th. He told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "I was playing on adrenaline and the thought of reaching the final kept me going." After the opening two rounds of strokeplay, Coupland faced a preliminary round of matchplay plus three rounds before his quarter-final encounter with Haines. He admitted: "I just kept telling myself I wasn't going to lose and somehow clawed it back. "I missed a three-foot putt on the 19th before I scrambled through on the 24th. "It was a downer to be still tired going into the semis, I didn't get a long lunch which didn't help but credit to Farran, he played solidly and holed the putts."
