Donald hits an iron during his third round at Turnberry

Hemel Hempstead's Luke Donald shot a level-par 70 on the third day of the Open to leave himself still within striking distance.

But, even if he is too far back to seriously challenge, Donald is still hoping to improve on his best Open finish - 35th at Hoylake in 2006.

But Londoner Anthony Wall went backwards, shooting a five-over 75, littered with seven bogeys.

He started the day on level par after a 68 and a 72 but he is now out of it.

Wall's only bright spots of a miserable round came at 5 and 15 where he managed birdies.

Donald, by contrast, is just close enough to still have an impact.

"I played very well today," he said. "I just need to get a bit hotter on the greens.

"It's been a different wind direction every day and you have to adapt and change your game but that's what Open championships are all about."
