Manassero played alongside Tom Watson |
Sixteen-year-old Italian Matteo Manassero effectively won the silver medal as the Open's leading amateur after making the cut at Turnberry. His one-over-par total of 141 meant he is the only amateur still left in the tournament and will claim the silver medal if he completes all four rounds. "It is one of the greatest days of my life," said Manassero. "In this weather it was tough and it is amazing to make the cut in the Open. It has been a fantastic day." German Stephan Gross, the only other amateur in the field, missed the cut by five shots. Manassero was playing with 59-year-old Tom Watson, who shares the overnight lead with fellow American Steve Marino on five under. Asked about his teenage playing partner, Watson said: "I was very impressed with him. "In fact, I told him on the way down the 18th hole, 'Don't change anything, just keep enjoying the game and you will get there'. "He is a beautiful putter, but he is also a great striker of the ball. He knows how to hit the ball and he put the ball in play all the time."
