Highlights - Tiger's round of frustration

An indifferent opening round of 71 left world number one Tiger Woods with some distance to make up on the leaders at the Open at Turnberry.

Well short of his best, Woods completed the front nine in one-under 35 before starting his trip home with a bogey.

A dropped shot on the 15th preceded a costly visit to Wilson's Burn on the 16th as he continued to struggle.

Veteran five-time champion Tom Watson led on five under par, alongside 2003 Open champion Ben Curtis.

"I certainly made a few mistakes out there today," admitted Woods.

"Realistically I probably should have shot about one or two under par.

"Hopefully tomorrow I can play a little better, clean it up and put myself headed in the right direction."

The 33-year-old began his campaign for a fourth Open title alongside England's Lee Westwood and 17-year-old Ryo Ishikawa, who both shot 68 to finish two under par.

Ishikawa's presence alongside the 14-time Major winner ensured the trio were tracked by a press pack swelled by a sizeable Japanese contingent.

Woods joined his two playing partners in picking up a stroke on the second with a more composed putt, but the American was back to evens after a battling bogey on the third.

After unsheathing his driver for the first time in the event, he tightened through his tee shot and left himself with too much to do from the rough.

Solid pars followed on the next three holes, before a powerful second shot on the seventh turned a wayward drive into a birdie.

A miscued approach shot on the ninth snaked away across the front of the green, but he got back up and down in two to scrape a par and reach the turn in credit.

He opted to leave the driver in the bag and take an iron off the tee at the postcard tenth, but his short game failed him as he three-putted, including a miss from within four feet, to drift out.

A finely-weighted putt on the par-three eleventh pulled back a stroke on the next hole, before he went close to another birdie on the twelve.

Fine recoveries rescued pars on 13 and 14 after crooked irons had put him amongst the long grass and spectators, but he could not avoid shipping another shot after an awkward chip kicked through on the 15th.

After finding the water and losing a shot around the closely-guarded 16th green, he saw birdie putts come up short and slide past on the final two holes.
