Furyk won the Memorial Tournament in 2002

Jim Furyk birdied the last to join fellow American Jonathan Byrd in a share of a one-shot lead at halfway in the Memorial Tournament in Ohio.

Furyk fired a two-under 70 to edge to seven under alongside Byrd, who shot 68 around Muirfield Village.

Ernie Els (70) and overnight leader Luke Donald (76) were tied in a group on four under, while Tiger Woods and Paul Casey ended day two on one under.

Padraig Harrington, Greg Owen, Brian Davis and Justin Rose missed the cut.

World number 14 Furyk, who won the Jack Nicklaus-hosted event in 2002, worked hard for his score after carding three bogeys alongside four birdies, while Byrd manage to keep his card blemish free.

"A clean day out there, no bogeys, something that I'm pretty proud of on this golf course," Byrd said. "I played solid all day. I did a good job of staying patient. It's a good start."

World number one Woods struggled to a two-over par 74, his worst round ever at the Memorial, an event he has won three times.

Woods, who has finished in the top 10 in all five strokeplay events he has competed in since returning from nine months off for knee surgery, carded his worst round since a 74 in the second round of the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

Despite finding 12 of 14 fairways in regulation, Woods reached only 11 of 18 greens in regulation.

"I hit it good off the tees. I drove it great," Woods said. "I just hit some poor shots. It is what it is. But I can hit the ball better than I did. Just need to hit my irons a little better and obviously make the short ones."

In a tie for second were Canada's former Master champion Mike Weir and American Mark Wilson.
