Retief Goosen notched his first PGA Tour victory since 2005 by winning the Transitions Championship in Tampa Bay.

The South African, 40, shot a one-under par round of 70 to triumph by a shot from Americans Brett Quigley and Charles Howell III on eight under.

Having chipped in for birdie at nine, a 17ft eagle putt at the 11th proved decisive for the double US Open winner.

Although Howell caught him with his third birdie in four holes at the 14th, he followed with back-to-back bogeys.

Goosen failed to get up and down from sand on the 16th and found dense rough by the 17th green.

However, he played a great chip to three feet and then holed from nearly 5ft at the 18th to take the $972,000 first prize.

Howell and Quigley both had birdie chances on the last but missed from 25 and 24ft respectively.

Tom Lehman, 50, seeking his first victory for nine years, led overnight, but three bogeys in an outward 39 dropped him back.

He then drove into water for a double-bogey six at the 16th and finished in eighth place place after a disappointing 75.

South Korea's Charlie Wi took over at the top for a time with five birdies in his first 11 holes.

But the 37-year-old then bogeyed three times, while Steve Stricker's chances went when he finished with back-to-back bogeys. They shared fourth spot with Australian Matthew Goggin.
