Rhys Davies was a one-time number in the American collegiate tour |
Rhys Davies has secured the biggest achievement of his rookie golfing career as the Welshman has finished runner-up at the Singha Thailand Open. The 24-year-old finished two shots behind Jyoti Randhawa to be second in the Asian Tour event with a 15-under-par 265 at Laguna Phuket Golf Club. Davies shot a three-under-par 67 on the final day to finish behind the Indian. "Jyoti hit a number of great shots and a few good putts at the right time and that was the difference," said Davies. The Bridgend golfer, who also finished tied second at last year's Vietnam Masters, was chasing his maiden victory on the Asian Tour. Former British Boys champion Davies, who made his major debut at the 2007 US Open, has been tipped as a possible golfing star of the future but he praised champion Randhawa, who claimed his eighth Asian Tour title in Thailand. The 36-year-old Indian carded a flawless five-under-par 65 for a 17-under 263 "Jyoti played great," said Davies, who played on the US collegiate tour for East Tennessee State University. "Maybe his experience also helped but I felt comfortable in that position. "It just did not quite happen - a few things did not go right and if they had it would have been a different story." Chinese Taipei's Lu Wei-chih finished three strokes behind Randhawa to take third with a 65. "I played marvellous golf the last two days," said Randhawa.
