Harrington carded three bogeys and two birdies in his second round |
Padraig Harrington failed to make the cut after a disappointing second round at the Northern Trust Open at the Riviera club, Los Angeles. The Irishman, who also missed out at last week's AT&T Classic, carded a two-over-par 72, three shots too many to make it into the weekend. Scott McCarron leads on 10 under after a 68, two ahead of fellow Americans Tommy Armour III and Steve Stricker. Luke Donald stayed in the hunt in joint-fourth place on seven under. England's Donald sits alongside South Korea's KJ Choi, Australian Geoff Ogilvy, Rory Sabbatini of South Africa and world number five Phil Mickelson, three shots adrift of McCarron. Overnight leader Mickelson, who has not finished higher than 42nd in a PGA event this year, began the round with an eagle on the 503-yard 1st hole. He reached the green in two and then sunk a 28-foot putt. But he bogeyed two of the next five holes and had two more bogeys on the back nine to drop out of the lead. | 606: DEBATE |
Japanese teen sensation Ryo Ishikawa also failed to make the cut in his PGA Tour debut, shooting an even-par-71 on Friday. McCarron, 43, is bidding to erase the memory of blowing a lead on the back nine at the Riviera club in 2002 when he finished second. "I remember making bogey on 18 which left a bad taste in my mouth," he said. "But I feel really good here. The course is playing a little tougher than Thursday. I am happy I played really solidly. There were just a couple of bogeys I would like to have back." As for Harrington, a change of format might help and the Open and USPGA champion will have that next up at the Accenture World Match Play in Arizona. He is due to play American Pat Perez, winner of last month's Bob Hope Classic, in Wednesday's opening round.
