Harrington has moved up the leaderboard after a slow start |
Open champion Padraig Harrington carded a 66 to move into a share of fifth spot but day three of the Singapore Open was unable to finish due to bad light. Only 27 of the 72 men who made the cut were able to complete their rounds, but Harrington did, moving to five-under. Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els were also five under but had to stop on the back nine, while Adam Scott missed the cut. Thailand's Chapchai Nirat leads at nine under after 12 holes, with Simon Dyson sharing second place two strokes back. Dyson, who led after the second round, is tied with Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and Lam Chih Bing of Singapore. It was a long day for the players, with Mickelson playing a total of 29 holes. He hit five birdies to complete a second round of 68, which was marred by a dropped shot at the last, when he was distracted by a camera when driving. The camera clicked as Mickelson was striking his drive and caddie Jim Mackay said it was "by far the angriest I've seen him in 16 years." The normally genial left-hander composed himself before beginning his third round, when he carded an eagle and two birdies to put himself in useful position four shots off the lead. "I'm still very much in contention but I need to keep making birdies on Sunday" he said. "I played well though." Mickelson overcame conflict with a cameraman to move into contention |
Thailand's Chapchai sank a 10-foot birdie at the 10th to make it a three-way tie for the lead, but gained a two-shot advantage with an eagle at the next when he holed a pitching wedge from 118 yards. "I had a game plan coming into this tournament and I will stick with that," the 25-year-old said. "From the position I am in now, I am 95% confident that I can go on and win the title." Home hopes rest with Lam, who has only two top 10 finishes to his name in 105 starts on the Asian Tour. | 606: DEBATE |
Lam, who will resume his third round on Sunday with a 15-foot putt for par on the 12th, said: "I'm on a great run. The support from the crowd is awesome. I am looking to do the same on Sunday." Scott, who won this event in 2005 and 2006 and was third last year, slumped to seven over, missing the cut by three strokes. "I played miserably. I just did not know where the ball was going and that of course put a lot of pressure on my putting," the 28-year-old Australian said.
