Howell reveals Ryder Cup target

David Howell believes missing out on the Ryder Cup team will make him more determined to play in two years' time.

The Swindon golfer was a part of the last two European sides which won the competition by record scorelines.

Injury and loss of form have seen him miss out this year, but Howell told BBC Radio Swindon that will spur him on.

"It will inspire me to make the next team. It's an incredible experience, there's something special about playing for your continent," he said.

"The hopes of the continent are on your shoulders and that's a wonderful thing to have, as well as a burden, but that's why we play sports."

Despite his success as an individual on the circuit, Howell said it was the prospect of playing in the Ryder Cup that had always driven him on.

"Winning the PGA championship was a wonderful honour, as it's the biggest tournament in Europe outside the Open," he added.

"But as a teenager I didn't dream of winning the PGA, I dreamed of playing in Ryder Cups."
