Wie misses cut in PGA Tour event

Michelle Wie
In her last five men's events Wie has gone a combined 67 shots over the cut

Michelle Wie failed for the eighth time to make the cut at a PGA Tour event, the Reno-Tahoe Open in Nevada.

Wie, 18, who carded a first-round 73, was in contention to become the first woman since 1945 to make a PGA Tour cut, turning at one over for the day.

But after a double-bogey at the fourth, the American took nine at the par-four eighth and ended on eight-over-par 80.

Parker McLachlin tied the course record with a 62 for a four-stroke lead over Larry Mize, Brian Davis and two others.

Wie, who was making her first PGA Tour appearance since January 2007, had two bogeys and one birdie through her first nine holes at the Montreux Golf and Country Club and was within striking distance of a cut line that was hovering around even par.

The nine-shot disaster came on the 464-yard eighth, when she had to take two penalty strokes.

He first tee shot ended up with an unplayable lie in the trees and the second went left into a waste area with trees, where she had to take another drop and needed four more shots to reach the green.

But she bravely finished her round with a birdie on the 626-yard, par-five ninth.

"I feel my game is a lot better. Obviously the score doesn't show it but I know what I need to work on," said Wie.

"I gave it my best and I felt like I did a lot of good things and hopefully that outshines the ones I made mistakes on."

McLachlin held a four-shot lead over 1987 Masters champion Mize (66), John Merrick (67), Australian Nick Flanagan (65) and England's Davis (67).

First-round leader Jeff Overton faded with a 75 and was left 10 shots adrift.
