Rose's eagle from the bunker at 15 was the highlight of his round

England's Justin Rose overcame a poor start to boost his chances of winning the Memorial Tournament in Ohio with a two-under-par 70 in the third round.

Rose dropped two shots early on, but holed a bunker shot for an eagle at 15 to help him finish on five under.

It put him in a five-way tie for second place, three strokes behind Australian Mathew Goggin, who carded a 71.

"I'd prefer to be leading by three, but three back is a great place to be," said the 27-year-old.

"There's really no pressure. I'm in a position where it's win-win."

Rose received the benefit of the doubt over a possible violation, when it was ruled his ball did not oscillate over a putt.

606: DEBATE

"I just wanted to make a 100% sure my ball didn't move out of its original position," Rose said.

Fellow Englishman Luke Donald's hopes of claiming victory look to have faded after a 74, that leaves him five shots off the pace at three under.

Goggin, meanwhile, now believes he can hold off the chasing pack to seal his first victory in 185 starts on the PGA Tour.

The Australian, who shared the halfway lead with Perry, jumped clear with two birdies in the first three holes, before the threat of lightning halted play for more than two hours.

He failed to regain his momentum after the break, however, on a day when the course averaged almost 74 strokes.

"Three shots in front, I expect to win," the 33-year-old said.

"Someone's going to have a good day because they're the best players in the world, so you can't expect to go out and chop it around and cruise to victory.

"You're going to have to play well, but the bonus is you're not leading the tournament because you played poorly."

Canadian Mike Weir and Americans Kenny Perry, Matt Kuchar and Jerry Kelly tied with Rose at five under.
