Woods storms to Match Play title
Tiger Woods in action at Dove Mountain
Woods fired six birdies in his opening nine holes
Tiger Woods secured his third WGC Match Play Championship title with a thumping record 8&7 win over Stewart Cink.

The world number one established a four-hole lead after the opening 18 holes with yet another stunning round.

He then sunk three successive birdies from the 24th hole and clinched the title when his approached shot landed two feet of the pin on the 29th hole.

It was Woods's sixth straight tournament success worldwide and he has now won eight of his last nine events.

Woods's winning margin was the biggest in the 10-year history of the tournament, beating the previous record of 6&5 held by David Toms after beating Chris DiMarco in 2005.

The 32-year-old - who holed 50 birdies over 117 holes at Dove Mountain - earned his 63rd PGA Tour title, overtaking Arnold Palmer to move into fourth in the all-time standings.

Only Sam Snead (82), Jack Nicklaus (73) and Ben Hogan (64) have won more tournaments.

"This week I made a bunch of birdies to advance," he said. "I had a great feel for the greens and, once I got the pace, they (the putts) kept falling.

"I can't wait to see Arnie! Just to be in the same breath as Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan, you've had a pretty good career."

Sweden's Henrik Stenson, who won the tournament last year, clinched third place after beating Justin Leonard 3&2.

His performance lifted him to second place in the European Ryder Cup standings.

Woods, who beat Stenson in the semi-finals, continued his imperious form against Cink in the sun-drenched Arizona conditions.

He set the standard during the opening round, sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on the second hole.

He followed that up with two more - while Cink bogeyed the par-three eighth - to leave him 4-up at the start of the back nine.

The round went from bad to worse for Cink when the bogeyed the par-four 11th, but he salvaged back a hole with a birdie at the par-four 12th.

Cink closed down the deficit, winning the par-three 13th when he sunk a 25-foot putt and the par-three 16th, but Woods established his dominance at the par-five 17th, chipping in to regain his 4-up lead at the halfway stage.

Woods then birdied the first two holes of the afternoon round, although he missed a four-foot putt on the par-five 23rd for only his second bogey of the day.

However, normal service was resumed when he birdied the 24th and 25th lead to go eight up.

Cink rallied with an eagle three on the par-five 28th with a 37-feet putt, while Woods just missed with his putt from a similar distance.

But the title was wrapped up when Cink missed his birdie attempt from 10 feet after Woods had fired his second approach shot to within two feet of the pin.

Sunday's 36-hole final:

Tiger Woods (US) v Stewart Cink (US)
Woods won 8&7

Sunday's 18-hole third place match:

Henrik Stenson (Swe) v Justin Leonard (US)
Stenson won 3&2
