Chowrasia's final round was his best of the week

Shiv Chowrasia held off Ireland's Damien McGrane to claim his maiden European Tour victory at the inaugural Indian Masters - his home event.

The 29-year-old Chowrasia's flawless final round included five birdies for a 67 and a score of nine under par.

McGrane, also chasing a first tour win, battled to claim second on seven under.

Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland endured a miserable round of 76, eight shots off the lead, while world number four Ernie Els (71) tied for sixth.

Excellent work on and around the greens helped the world-ranked 388 card his stunning 67 - his finest round of the week.

The former caddie, who started two shots off overnight leader Raphael Jacquelin, carded four birdies in his front nine to go two strokes clear.

McGrane, tied second overnight at five under, held a share of the lead after six holes only for Chowrasia to take a decisive advantage after a stunning 25-foot putt for a birdie two on the seventh hole.

Bogeys at the seventh and 10th and 17th holes ended any hopes of a comeback for the Irishman, but a birdie at the last ensured his best European Tour finish.

"It is the biggest win of my life. I can't describe my emotions. Only when I get back to Kolkata will it sink in," said Chowrasia, who earns a two-year exemption on the European Tour.

Els struggled to challenge Chowrasia for the magnificent trophy

"On the back nine I tried to make my pars and I am glad I was able to do that.

"Over the last five holes I did think about winning and I just wanted to stay calm and focus on my target. I feel like I have played very well and stayed calm.

"I never thought that I could win this tournament, but I don't know what I'm going to do in the future. I am sure I will play more both in Asia and Europe, but my ultimate target is to get onto the US Tour."

Jose Manuel Lara (72) of Spain claimed third at five under, a shot clear of Frenchman Jacquelin (74) and India's Digvijay Singh (70).
