The 12-year-old Maguire twins found the going tough on day one of the Northern Ireland Ladies Open but still finished ahead of a number of tour regulars.

Lisa Maguire was only two over after nine holes but came back in 44 for a 82 while Leona was one shot worse on 83.

Switzerland's Nora Angehrn shot a three-under-par 69 to take a two-shot lead at the Hilton Templepatrick club.

Italy's Sophie Sandolo was in a group of six on 71 while Northern Ireland amateur Danielle McVeigh shot a 72.

Other players who joined Sandolo on one under were Australian pair Leah Hart and Sarah Kemp, France's Patricia Beliard, American Libby Smith and South Africa's Ashleigh Simon.

English players Kiran Matharu and Kirsty Taylor plus Welsh woman Becky Brewerton were also in the 10-strong group on level par.

Fancied players Nikki Garrett, Trish Johnson and Gwladys Nocera had to be content with three-over 75s - the same score produced by Ireland's Claire Coughlan.

Lisa Maguire's round left her joint 117th after day one in the 127-strong field in the 135,000 event.

Leona had four players behind her after the opening round at the county Antrim course.

Lisa and Leona finished first and third in last year's World Under-12 Championship at the world-famous Pinehurst in the US.

And two handicapper Lisa came into her first professional event after reaching the semi-finals of last week's Irish Amateur Championship.

The twins were given sponsors' invitations to compete this week.
