Ochoa (right) won six titles last season |
Mexican Lorena Ochoa has ousted Annika Sorenstam as world number one for the first time since the official rankings were introduced in February last year. The rankings are decided on a rolling two-year calendar with each player's points total divided by the number of the tournaments played.
Ochoa, 25, has had five top 10 finishes in her six tournaments this year.
Sorenstam, 36, has not won a tournament in 2007 and is likely to be out of action until June with a back injury.
"Today is one of the most special days in my life," Ochoa
said in a statement.
"This is
a huge accomplishment for me - especially this week when I am at home and I am able to
celebrate the news with the people in my country."
Ochoa is defending her title in this week's Corona
Championship in Morelia, Mexico.
