 Fans take shelter as play is disrupted at the Verizon Heritage |
The PGA Tour's Verizon Heritage event will go into a fifth day after strong winds prevented any player from completing Sunday's final round. Play was called off as winds gusted up to 30mph, blowing balls around on the greens while an official was injured after being hit by a falling branch.
"It got dangerous out there for spectators and was unplayable," said PGA tournament director Slugger White.
Play will resume at 0745 local time, 1245 BST, with Jerry Kelly leading.
Kelly is on 13 under, one ahead of South African Ernie Els and Kevin Na.
The trio, playing together in the final round, had just hit their approach shots into the first green when officials sent them back to the clubhouse.
The first players out onto the course had only completed eight holes when play was called off.
The tournament last went to a fifth day in 2001 when Jose Coceres defeated Billy Mayfair in a play-off.
Official William Millon was taken to hospital after being hit by the falling tree branch although he was "talkative, conscious and alert" according to tournament spokesman Arena Burdick.
