Britain's Justin Rose somehow lost a five-stroke advantage in the fourth round of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
The 26-year-old heads into the final 18 holes tied with American Lucas Glover.
Rose went into Saturday's round at the Country Club course with a two-stroke lead and added three more early birdies to go clear of the field.
He carded three further birdies but also added four bogeys for a two-under 70, while Glover birdied five of his last eight holes for a 65 at La Quinta.
Rose was not too downbeat about his fortunes.
"Not a bad score, not a great score; kept my nose in and around the lead, so obviously that's a good thing going into tomorrow," he said.
"I really wanted to try to pull four, five, six ahead - the bigger the lead, the better.
"If I was to be brutally honest, I think that coming back in one-over on the back nine, I feel like I let two or three slip away for sure.
"But at the same time, I had been pretty mistake-free up until then - and four rounds, it's a lot to ask."
American John Rollins is two strokes behind after his fourth-round 67.
Phil Mickelson, the only player in the top 30 of the world rankings entered in the event, completed a six-under 66 on Saturday to lie 13-under in a tie for 19th.
The final round will be played at the Country Club.
