Hunter Mahan birdied the first extra hole to beat Jay Williams in a play-off for the Travelers Championship.

Mahan looked to have thrown his chance away with bogeys on 16 and 17 but birdied the last to finish level with Williamson on 15 under.

Playing the 18th again he fired his approach to within two feet of the pin and holed out for victory.

Nick O'Hern edged out Vijay Singh for third on 11 under, while Justin Rose finished tied for ninth on seven under.

Rose started the day six shots off the lead and never quite threatened despite birdies in each of the first two holes as he recorded a two-under 68.

You have to keep battling and keep working. It's not over until it's over.

Mahan had started the day a shot behind Williamson but fired seven birdies in a round of 65 with just the two bogeys on 16 and 17 to close the gap.

Williamson bogeyed the first but then found five birdies as the pair kept the field at arm's length.

He had a chance to extend the play-off after hitting his approach to seven feet but he missed his birdie putt.

It was Mahan's first PGA Tour title, a year after he finished second in the same event but he admitted he had to battle hard to fend off Williamson.

"Jay was a fighter. He fought the whole day," said Mahan.

"A couple of times I thought I was going to build up a little bit of a lead and he just made some great shots and some big putts. It was so tough.

"You have to keep battling. It's 18 holes and you have to keep working and keep working. It's not over until it's over."

Fred Funk was fifth, while Bo Van Pelt, Tom Lehman and David Toms finished in a three-way tie for sixth.
