Three NI players in Walker squad
Rory McIlroy
McIlroy won the European Amateur title over the summer
Rory McIlroy is one of three Northern Ireland players named in the Great Britain & Ireland for next year's Walker Cup at Royal County Down.

The 17-year-old is joined in the 22-man squad by Lurgan's Gareth Shaw and Clandeboye's Jonathan Caldwell.

County Louth's Simon Ward is also included in the squad.

US Amateur champion Richie Ramsay, Lloyd Saltman, Gary Wolstenholme, Rhys Davies and Nigel Edwards remain from the side beaten in Chicago last year.

The Walker Cup takes place at Royal County Down on 8-9 September.

Non-playing captain Colin Dalgleish said: "We are very conscious that young players improve so quickly that it is very possible, indeed likely, that one or two players in the team could come from outside this squad.

"However, we want to familiarise our best players with the course and consequently we are planning a trip to Royal County Down in April."

Retiring chairman of selectors Peter McEvoy added: "It is nice to see five Walker Cup players in the squad, together with six St Andrews Trophy players.

Squad: Gary Boyd (Cherwell Edge), Jonathan Caldwell (Clandeboye), Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie), Rhys Davies (Royal Porthcawl), Nigel Edwards (Whitchurch), Zac Gould (Vale of Glamorgan), Scott Henry (Cardross), David Horsey (Styal), Stephen Lewton (Woburn), Llewellyn Matthews (Southerndown), Kevin McAlpine (Alyth), Rory McIlroy (Holywood), Kier McNicoll (Carnoustie), Jamie Moul (Stoke by Nayland), Paul O'Hara (Colville Park), Ben Parker (Royal Birkdale), Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen), Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw), Gareth Shaw (Lurgan), Simon Ward (Co Louth), Paul Waring (Bromborough), Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs)
