McIlroy won the European Amateur title over the summer |
European Amateur champion Rory McIlroy has been included in a Great Britain & Ireland squad to prepare for next year's Walker Cup in Northern Ireland. The 17-year-old, whose victory earned him a place at the 2007 Open at Carnoustie, is part of a 22-man squad.
US Amateur champion Richie Ramsay, Lloyd Saltman, Gary Wolstenholme, Rhys Davies and Nigel Edwards remain from the side beaten in Chicago last year.
The Walker Cup takes place at Royal County Down on 8-9 September.
Non-playing captain Colin Dalgleish said: "We are very conscious that young players improve so quickly that it is very possible, indeed likely, that one or two players in the team could come from outside this squad.
"However, we want to familiarise our best players with the course and consequently we are planning a trip to Royal County Down in April."
Retiring chairman of selectors Peter McEvoy added: "It is nice to see five Walker Cup players in the squad, together with six St Andrews Trophy players.
