Westwood and Montgomerie reflect on their near miss

Lee Westwood missed a putt on the 18th that would have given him and Colin Montgomerie victory over Chad Campbell and Ryder Cup rookie Vaughn Taylor.

The Englishman's 10-foot effort brushed the cup and his pairing were left to settle for a half from a tight match.

The European pair led going down the 17th but the Americans levelled and held out to earn the USA's first score in Saturday afternoon's foursomes.

Both sides had chances but neither were ahead by more than a hole at any time.

The result took the overall score to 10-5 as the European team took control of the tournament.

Westwood and Montgomerie have now halved the two matches that they have played together after Friday morning's match with Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco.

The European pair took an early lead through Westwood, who stroked his putt home after a tentative Campbell had missed.

Taylor levelled for the Americans and then holed from 25 feet, forcing Montgomerie to chip in for a half.

But the USA duo went ahead when Westwood missed from six feet to bogey the par five 10th.

Montgomerie levelled the match at the 12th, stroking home from six feet - and three holes later the Europeans took the lead.

Campbell secured a half with a putt at the 14th but his team-mate found the water at the following hole and the USA team only manage a bogey.

Taylor and Campbell both three-putted at the 16th to squander a chance to level the match once again - but at the next, the match was back to all-square after Westwood missed from six feet.
