Ian Poulter won the Madrid Open by five strokes to take his first European Tour win for nearly two years.

The Englishman fired a final round three-under-par 69 for a final total 22 under par to beat Spaniard Ignacio Garrido, who scored a 66 on Sunday.

Wales' Phillip Price was one behind, a stroke ahead of Padraig Harrington.

The Irishman was the best placed of three Ryder Cup players, with Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal and Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke off the pace.

Olazabal finished nine shots behind Poulter, and Clarke - in his first tournament since the death of his wife with cancer - ending on seven under.

Clarke, who was troubled throughout the four days by his putting, said: "I played all right and I'm very pleased with how I'm hitting it. It'll be a different golf course next week, which will be nice."

Scotland's Gary Orr, the early leader who started the day in third, finished with a disappointing 74 and a total of 276.

Poulter said: "I got my head down this week and I said I had a job to do and I played great, with just a couple of bogeys on those par-3s.

"But it's hard when you're four or five shots clear - it's difficult to concentrate."
