Singh is back on form after going nearly a year without a win

R3 LEADERBOARD:
-11 V Singh (Fij)
-9 C Pettersson (Swe), M Goggin (US), S Cink (US), T Immelman (SA), J Ogilvie (US)
-8 T Woods (US), J Furyk (US), S Gutschewski (US)

Vijay Singh fired a three-under-par 68 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead after three rounds of the PGA Western Open in Illinois.

Singh, who claimed his first win in 11 months at last month's Barclays Classic, is 11 under par.

He is two shots clear of Carl Pettersson, Mathew Goggin, Stewart Cink, Trevor Immelman and Joe Ogilvie.

Tiger Woods is a shot further back after a 66 while England's Justin Rose is five off the pace after a 65.

Luke Donald was one shot further back with the final English competitor Brian Davis another shot adrift.

Woods sunk five birdies and added a 40-foot putt for an eagle to move further up the leaderboard.

"It was nice to actually make some putts and piece together something out there," said Woods.

I thought the leading score would be at least 13 but to my surprise I'm the leader

"Obviously at my last tournament I didn't do that so it's nice to feel I've made some progress."

It was a mixed day for Swedish golfer Daniel Chopra, who took a two-shot lead into the third round.

He slumped to a 76, and is now six strokes off the pace, but it emerged he is still eligible for the Ryder Cup after all.

It has been discovered he rejoined the European Tour as an affiliate last November and is 49th on the European Ryder Cup world rankings list.

The first five members the list will be chosen for Ian Woosnam's European side.

With 60 points on offer to the winner of the Western Open he could move into contention, although his poor round on Saturday has dented his chances.

Phil Mickelson also dropped out of contention at Cog Hill after he carded a 75 to slide to three over for the tournament.

However, the American is confident his game will turn around in time for the Open at Royal Liverpool, which starts on 20 July.

"There's plenty of time to get sharp," Mickelson said. "With only another week left to get ready, I am looking ahead."
